Malala Yousafzai is a 19-year-old Pakistani girl who, at 15, was shot in the head for defending women’s right to education. The attack took place in October 2012 when Malala was on a school bus leaving Khushal School, in the city of Mingora, in the Swat Valley, Pakistan. Taliban extremists saw her as a threat for standing out and speaking in public advocating that girls and young women in her country have access to the same education that Pakistani boys and men receive.

Contrary to expectations, Malala survived the attack and became a symbol of the fight for freedom and women’s rights.
